A Dodge Challenger Hybrid?

But it won't be for efficiency gains or tree-hugging reasons—FCA's still chasing that performance carrot

Dodge will move away from thirsty V8s for the next generation of Challenger in favour of more modern and efficient electrified powertrains, The Detroit News reports.

Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley acknowledges the aging two-ton Dodge Challenger platform needs an update, and explained the car will receive a hybrid powertrain within the next decade.

“The reality is those platforms and that technology we used does need to move on,” Manley said. “They can’t exist as you get into the middle-2020s.”

Of the upcoming muscle car’s powertrain, he said “What it isn’t going to be is a V-8 supercharged 700-horsepower engine.”

The Challenger has seen excellent sales the past few years due, and for 2018 nabbed the title of second-best-selling muscle car, with the Ford Mustang number one.

Speculation is circulating the next generation could use Chrysler’s venerable Pentastar V6 hooked up to twin turbochargers and an electric motor. More rumours suggest a base model version of the car would come with a 2.0-litre turbo-four and a 48-volt electrical system, which would really make the purists angry.

Dodge also says that the electrification of its muscle car wouldn’t be for efficiency or economy, and that the added pieces would instead primarily be performance boosters.

Other, more high-end cars, like the Porsche Panamera eHybrid, put electric motors to use in similar ways; that sedan can hit 100 km/h from zero in 3.4 seconds when equipped with the Sport Chrono package.
