Hyundai finally took the covers off the electric race car prototype it's jointly developed with electric supercar builder Rimac, the RM20e, in late September, showing off an EV hatchback with mid-mounted electric motors.
The motors can turn out 810 horsepower and 708 foot-pounds of torque, although that horsepower figure is only available in 20-second bursts.
Still, 810 horsepower for 20 seconds is enough to burn a whole lot of rubber.
The power comes from an 800-volt motor linked to a 60-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, and Hyundai says it's good for a sub-three-second zero-to-60-mph time, and a top speed over 250 km/h.
'RM' stands for Racing Midship, referring to the electric motors' being connected to the rear wheels only. The motor is mounted directly behind the front seats for perfect weight distribution, like a classic Group B rally car, but driven by electrons instead of hydrocarbons.
While the concept is undoubtedly awesome, there is no indication yet it will make it to a production version. Just like all other RM prototypes dating back to the first one in 2014, this will be used as an electric tech development mule. The good news is that anything learned with the RM20e will likely make its way onto a street car in the coming future.
"The electrified RM platform will continue to evolve along with the growth of this Rimac partnership," Hyundai said in a statement.
