Hyundai is giving the boot to the Elantra GT after the 2020 model year, and that includes in Canada, even though we tend to be far more receptive to hatchbacks than our neighbours to the south.
An all-new Elantra sedan is being launched for 2021, along with the model's first-ever hybrid version, but the GT hatchback isn't along for that ride.
A new Elantra N Line is also being launched, while the Elantra GT N Line model is discontinued.
Hyundai's U.S. office said through its website that the Elantra GT is being dropped "due to an expanded SUV lineup that includes Venue and Kona." It seems you can sell a hatchback even to American buyers, but only if it sits higher and looks more like a sport-ute than a traditional wagon.
Both the 2020 Elantra sedan and GT use a 2.0L four-cylinder engine, making 147 horsepower in the sedan, and tuned to 161 horsepower in the GT.
The Elantra GT N Line and the Elantra Sport sedan share a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder that makes 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, and is available with a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The 2021 Elantra N Line will continue to use that engine, and – to the relief of the "Save the Manuals" folks – will also offer the same choice of manual or automatic transmission. The N Line will also include a stiffer suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels, multi-link independent rear suspension, larger front rotors, sport seats, alloy pedals, and N Line styling cues. Performance parts will be available from dealers in overseas markets, but so far there's no word on any plans to offer them here.
Following the Elantra N Line launch, Hyundai will add a Sonata N Line, with 2.5L turbocharged direct-injection engine.
