The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety made the requirements for its highest honor more stringent for 2024, which has proven to be a bit of a stumbling block for many vehicles -- but Hyundai has demonstrated that a relatively small change can have a big impact. The 2024 Hyundai Tucson was previously awarded the agency's top-tier Top Safety Pick+ honors before the new requirement came into play then was downgraded to a Top Safety Pick. But Tucsons built after March 2024 regain their status as a Top Safety Pick+.

IIHS rates vehicle performance on a four-point scale: poor, marginal, acceptable and good. To qualify as a Top Safety Pick+, vehicles now must earn an acceptable or good rating in the updated moderate overlap front crash test. In this evaluation, a vehicle travels at 40 mph into a barrier that covers 40% of the vehicle's width. With the barrier's surface made from deformable aluminum honeycomb, the test simulates an offset head-on crash in which both vehicles are traveling just below 40 mph.
In the past, the moderate overlap front crash test was performed with just a single crash-test dummy in the driver's seat of the car. Since vehicle safety has evolved to the point that most vehicles are able to earn good ratings in the test, IIHS's updated version has turned the focus to the rear seat. A second mannequin now rides in the seat behind the driver; whereas the driver dummy is the size of an average man, the rear-seat passenger represents a 12-year-old child or a small woman.
As rear-seat occupants are generally a safe distance from the significant structural deformation of the vehicle in a frontal crash, rear-seat safety is more a matter of occupant restraint. Hyundai's update to the 2024 Tucson shows how easy (relative to making major structural changes) it is for automakers to meet the test's demands: It modified the rear seatbelts.
